In Jesus Christ was life; and that life was the light for everyone. – John 1:4

Learn from the beginning

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

– Genesis 1:1-5

There are so many things we learn from the first few verses in the Bible. The first thing I see is as long as we are earthly beings, we are going to be like the primeval earth. We are going to have some amount of formlessness, emptiness and darkness in us. We need to understand, that the work of the Holy Spirit is not to admire the good parts in us but to clean up the bad parts. That is why we see in John 16:8 it says, “And when He (Holy Spirit) comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:” The more we are delivered from sin the more we walk in God’s light and fulfill His purpose. The more we understand God’s judgement there is more form and structure in our lives. The more we know the righteousness of God and walk in it, the more the emptiness in our lives will disappear.

The next thing we see it that the first thing God wants to establish in the earth is light. This light is not the physical sunlight, but spiritual light. When we have spiritual light we know what is God’s purpose and we will tend to fulfill God’s purpose. Sin is nothing but being away from fulfilling God’s purpose. The first step from being delivered from our sinful nature is to receive the revelation of God’s purpose in our lives. The next step is to faithfully walk according to that revelation to fulfill God’s purpose. The moment we start in that direction, God’s grace will start working in our lives.

We also see that God wants to separate light from darkness. Many times we want to receive the revelation of God and yet continue to walk according to the fashions of this world. This is because we mix God’s light with worldly darkness. That is why the Psalmist says in Psalm 1:1-2: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night. Every person walking in the flesh (including each one of us) is a wicked person, a sinner and a scoffer. Instead of walking in flesh, we should walk according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Today it is the Holy Spirit who writes God’s law in our hearts. We should clearly separate the revelation that comes from flesh and the revelation that comes from the Holy Spirit. We should reject the revelation of the flesh and walk in the revelation of the Holy Spirit.

We also see that then God started creating a time period of spiritual light and spiritual darkness. In the night we do not do anything, we simply rest. In the day we work. This means there is going to be periods of spiritual light and spiritual darkness in our lives. When we get a revelation from the LORD we work to walk according to that revelation. When we do not get any revelation from the LORD, we stop working and wait for the LORD’s light. If we take some initiative when there is no revelation from the LORD, we are bound to fail.
